Trainer
Name: Bolin
Class: Black Belt
Type: Ground / Rock
Ability: Mastery of Training
The Trainer is skilled at training and disciplining their Pokémon. Be it through stern discipline or a kind hand and words, they have the ability to draw out a Pokémon's true potential. The Master of Training is more efficient in leveling up their Pokémon and may distribute 4 additional levels each week (for a total of 16 a week, or 32 with an Intensive Training session). Additionally, due to their extensive knowledge of Pokémon, Masters of Training may teach a single Pokémon one Tutor Move or relearn one move a week.

Enlightened Level: 34 [week 34]
Abilities: Upon evolving for the first time, Bolin bulks up considerably. His defensive skills radically improve, probably due in part to the fact that his skin and bones have hardened over. His skin hasn't really changed in appearance, though you will find it is difficult to pierce with claws or sharp objects. His control over rocks and the ground has dramatically increased as well, allowing him to lift even larger boulders and exhibit and even more refined control over the element.

Attacks/Abilities are similar to the following- Fissure, Magnitude, Spikes, Rock Slide, Rollout, and Wide Guard

First Stage - Sand Attack, Mud Slap, Dig, Rock Blast, Rock Throw and Rock Polish

Pokémon Bonded: 6

CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Bolin
Character Canon: Avatar: Legend of Korra

History: Wiki Link

AU History:
When Bolin was small he had his brother to play with and two wonderful parents to care for him. On Bolin's birthday he was given a pokemon egg as part of his "growing responsibility"...unfortunately this would prove to be a bad omen. A few weeks later, Bolin's parents were dead and the egg hatched that day into a Cubone, Bolin's first and most precious pokemon. Following that, Bolin had to take care of a Cubone and Mako had to take care of his brother.

The two orphans were eventually pulled into Caldera's underground, in some cases literally as a few gangs work out of the caverns of Caldera. While they didn't pull any big jobs or do anything terribly illegal, Bolin and his brother often had to run errands and take bets for illegal fights in order to make a living on the street. Bolin wasn't too happy with this life though, since even though his brother kept him out of the worst crimes, it was still working for a gang.

The last straw comes when Bolin finds out they're trying to sabotage the official match of his hero and a strong Earthkin (Ground/Fighting type). The Earthkin is being blackmailed into throwing the match in an Earthkin Clash, but Bolin can't stand to see his hero brought down like that. He talks his brother into helping and they save the day. They quit the gang that same day and help the Earthkin get out of his blackmail. The Earthkin, seeing two boys that now need HIS help, takes the boys under his wing and have them help around the building where the matches are held in exchange for room and food.

Bolin also begins training under him. His dream is to become a top notch and powerful Earthkin and to especially play in Caldera's version of Versus (the aforementioned Earthkin Clash where Earthkin form teams to battle and knock each other out of the ring). Bolin enjoys his life in Caldera, even with the threat of war with Gigas on the horizon.

Things take a turn for the worse after a few years, however, when Bolin gets kidnapped by Gigas's troops one night when he's trying to deliver some supplies to the troops as they hold out for help from Union. He's rescued by his brother before anything too terrible can happen, but he's still left with some trouble sleeping. However this doesn't stop him from taking up the fight and trying to help defend Caldera and help Union take out Gigas.

Once they win, Bolin can't help but want to journey to Union and check the place out.

Canon Personality: It's been said that Bolin always has a smile on his face and a lady on his arm. While the second part might not necessarily be true (he hasn't dated much, but he DOES apparently have a LOT of fangirls) it IS true that Bolin is a guy with a grin plastered on his face most of the time. Despite his rough life, Bolin has always seen the world through rose-colored glasses. No matter how bad things got, Bolin would find a silver-lining to the situation. This is mostly due to the fact that Mako shielded his younger brother from some of the worst things in life (taking care of all things financial and related to their well-being), but even when Bolin is faced with a difficult situation or even a life and death situation he puts on a smile and cracks a joke. If that doesn't work, Bolin tends to try the polite approach. Twice now, when Bolin has been cornered by people trying to hurt him and his family he has called them "Mr." and "Sir." This could stem from his time on the streets when he felt the need to be polite to everyone due to his lower class. You'd be surprised what you can get with a cute face and a "please sir" out there.

Honestly, Bolin is just talkative in general. He is very much an outgoing person and willing to make friends as soon as he sees you. Unlike Mako who is reserved and quiet, Bolin will chat it up with anyone, almost to the point of being a motormouth. There are times he just doesn't know when it's best to STOP talking, but he hasn't quite learned that this can be annoying at times. He tends to do this especially when attention is focused away from him as a means of getting it back.

While not EVERYTHING is a joke to him, he does tend to play things for laughs and doesn't like to be bogged down by sadness or anger. Bolin is still a teenager though and can be rather emotional at times. For example, when Korra and Mako "broke his heart" he wound up sobbing and running away from his problem. He got mopey and even called Mako out for betraying him later, and overall acted completely dramatic about the situation. This, again, could stem from the fact that Mako has protected Bolin from a lot of hardships so something like this hits Bolin harder than someone who would be used to rejection and betrayal (something that Bolin has never experienced before).

Still, most of the time Bolin comes across as very goofy and laid back and even when he is upset he bounces back quickly. He doesn't worry about financial matters and leaves that to Mako, at least that's how he acts. He does want to help his brother in any way that he can and tries to put forward his own plans to help keep them from living on the streets again. He's starting to realize just how much Mako does for him and he wants to be able to do those things as well. Bolin is always eager to please, especially his brother, but sometimes his ideas aren't always the most practical (ie getting money by having his pet Pabu perform). As I said, Mako has shielded Bolin from a lot of things and this lends itself to Bolin's naivety about life in general. He doesn't have to worry about his next meal because Mako is always there to provide for him and look out for him. He's had it rough, but he's always had Mako to rely on.

Bolin's innocent nature comes with its own problems. Bolin can be a bit TOO trusting at times. He takes people at face value and makes friends easily, even if those friends might not be what is best for him. Still, that eagerness to please doesn't end with just Mako. Bolin likes the attention given to him as a pro-bender and loves being in the lime-light. He thinks everyone is his friend and doesn't have many enemies at all. This can get Bolin into a lot of trouble at times, but it's hard to be angry at him for it because he's usually just doing it to be helpful. He is a caring individual after all and doesn't want to see anyone have to deal with the things he did as a kid. He has a soft spot for animals and kids, especially homeless ones, after all that's how he wound up with Pabu.

Like any pair of brothers, Mako and Bolin don't always see eye to eye. Bolin can even seem jealous of his older brother at times since he seems to have it all together and is even said to be the better bender of the two. Bolin also doesn't have his brother's worldly sense and tends to overlook issues of money, girls, food, or other such problems since, to him, they AREN'T problems. Still, Mako is Bolin's entire world and without him Bolin would be completely lost and out of luck. Korra is quickly becoming a part of that world as well. At first it was romantic feelings, but whether or not Korra is his girlfriend, Bolin cares about her and likes to see her happy.

AU Deviation: For one, Bolin can be a lot more responsible when it comes to his family if only because he had a younger "brother" of his own to take care of in the form of the newly hatched Cubone. While Mako looked after Bolin, it was Bolin's job to look after Cubone and make sure the little guy survived because it was his last connection to his parents. In that regard, Bolin can become overly protective of the pokemon in his care, especially Cubone.

Also, given the fact that Bolin has recently lived through a two-year war in this particular game, he doesn't have quite the naivete and innocence of his canon counterpart. Bolin has lived through the siege of his birth town and that has to change a guy, especially one who has been kidnapped. While not quite cold, Bolin won't be the innocent and carefree youth that he is in canon. He has seen what real battles in a war are like and it didn't do much for him. That's not to say that he won't be a lovable goofball, just that it might be a bit toned down from what's been seen in The Legend of Korra.

Basically this version of Bolin is more mature and responsible than his canon counterpart, probably making him seem older than his years would suggest.

Canon Abilities: Bolin is an earth bender which means he has control over rocks, dirt, sand, etc. He is not advanced enough to bend metal, but otherwise he's is fairly skilled. He knows how to fight since bending styles are often tied to different martial arts styles (Bolin's fighting style would probably be akin to mixed martial arts with an emphasis on boxing). Bolin is also quite capable of sewing, although this is mostly patch-up work or making costumes for his pet fire ferret Pabu. His muscular build also lends itself to his ability to lift heavy objects but that is not within the realm of superhuman or anything.

Enlightened Abilities: Ground/Rock type | Mastery of Training
Initial Abilities: Bolin starts off with mediocre defensive skills that are easily broken down. He is very good at taking a hit though and doesn't collapse easily. He makes up for this poor defense with amazing offensive abilities. He's fairly strong for his age because of his typing. He can control rocks fairly well, though the bigger boulders and pieces of Earth prove more difficult for him to move with his abilities.

Attacks/Abilities are similar to the following- Sand Attack, Mud Slap, Dig, Rock Blast, Rock Throw and Rock Polish

First Evolution: Upon evolving for the first time, Bolin bulks up considerably.

Second Evolution: Bolin's final evolution is where the most dramatic physical transformation takes place. The skin on his body gains a more plate-like appearance, similar to a Sandshrew or Sandslash. It is mainly concentrated on his arms, back, and legs, though if he concentrates the skin on the rest of his body can transform as well. Used right, this outer shell can greatly increase his defensive capabilities and makes his skin as hard as diamonds. He can even turn the plates on his skin into spikes. His strength and endurance have also seen an increase making him not only good at taking a hit but also very effective at dealing hits as well. He can now move several large boulders and rocks at once and has master control over the earth and rocks around him or even far away from him.

Attacks/Abilities are similar to the following- Land's Wrath, Earthquake, Earth Power, Bulldoze, Rock Wrecker

Starter Pokémon:
Cubone (lv. 12)
Sentret (lv. 10)

Notes/Special Considerations: I would like to propose a particular contest of skill that would have been popular in Caldera. I was thinking of calling it Earthkin Clash and it would work similar to Pro-Bending in Bolin's canon. Earthkin Clash would be a battle of skill and strength between teams of Earthkin. The objective of the sport is to gain as much territory within the ring as possible within three minutes, or, alternatively, to drive the members of the opposing team over the edge of the ring. Because of Caldera's focus on strength and skill, this is a very popular sport and the best teams are held with high regard. Teams are only allowed three members on the court at a time, though teams can actually consist of multiple members, up to six. Some teams concentrate on specific types, while others go for a more mixed approach in developing a well balanced team. Unbeknownst to most, this is a hold over from the Pokemon Gym challenge of pre-Savior times. I only add this information as kind of a "isn't this neat" sort of thing.

SAMPLES
First-Person:
What do you feel your role in Union is?
Uh...well I guess since I'm new to Union it's to help build relationships with Caldera, right? Oh! I guess I can also help teach you all about Earthkin Clash. It's the really awesome sport we play back in Caldera. I plan on being on a winning team one day.

To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
I would do whatever it takes! My friends are really important to me. I might not have left Caldera before now, but I'm a Ground/Rock Earthkin so I'm pretty tough. I would make sure we all got back home okay. It's important to look after one another, you know?

What area do you seek to explore? The peaceful forest, in search of new, previously overlooked discoveries; the uncharted caves, in search of the unknown; or the wildest of mountain terrain, in search of danger, adventure, and thrills?
I think exploring the mountains would be the most fun. I'd want to do it with friends though, what's the fun in adventure without someone to have it with? I'd love to see more out there. It's why I'm here in Union.

What do you think your Pokémon respect most about you?
Oh well, Cubone and I go way back.

Character Name: Bolin
Series: Legend of Korra
Gender: Male
Age: 16
Species: Human/Bender? I don't think they are a separate species though...

Appearance: Bolin is a young man of a heftier build and rather bulky. He's on the shorter side, height wise, which only adds to the illusion of his stocky frame. I assure you, however, that is is mostly muscle from his days training for probending. His hair is dark brown nearly black and he keeps it cut short and swept back out of his face, a single curl coming down on his forehead. He has green eyes below bushy, black eyebrows and a rather cute button nose. Typically he's seen with a grin on his face but is also very expressive with his facial features, a boy who typically wears his emotions very openly. Bolin wears shades of green and brown a lot, the typical colors of an earth bender...at least when he's not wearing the Fire Ferret uniform anyway.

Personality: It's been said that Bolin always has a smile on his face and a lady on his arm. While the second part might not necessarily be true (he hasn't dated much, but he DOES apparently have a LOT of fangirls) it IS true that Bolin is a guy with a grin plastered on his face most of the time. His muscular build also lends itself to his ability to lift heavy objects but that is not within the realm of superhuman or anything.

Items: No significant items. Bolin wasn't exactly known for carrying anything.

History: Not a lot is known concretely about Bolin's childhood. What we do know is that when Bolin was 6 his parents were killed in a mugging gone wrong, the culprit being a fire bender and Mako (his other brother) was there to watch it all. Mako and Bolin were then put out on the streets, not wanting to be in an orphanage for fear of being separated from the only family they had left. Mako attempted to protect Bolin from the nastier parts of living on the streets but a boy of 8 could only do so much. Mako and Bolin worked odd jobs as they grew up, helping the Triple Threat Triad with odd jobs and mostly trying to survive as best they could.

Eventually, they were taken in by an older man named Toza who helped manage one of the probending gyms. One day, he discovered Mako fighting on the streets and invited the two live in a room above the gym if they did odd jobs for him. The boys agreed, mostly seeing it as an opportunity to get off the streets, and began training to become probenders themselves. It was also around this time that Bolin found Pabu, a fire ferret, forraging for food in the garbage and brought him home to live with them as a pet. He thought he could train the little guy and also convinced Mako that Pabu could be a great mascot for their future team.

Before they could have a team though they had to find a water bender. They found Hasook at some point and allowed him to be on their team, although Hasook and Mako were constantly butting heads at matches and at practice. Hasook wasn't going to last, however, and Bolin was the one to discover their water-bending replacement: Avatar Korra. Bolin immediately took to the young Avatar, flirting with her and encouraging her to show him her moves. Eventually Mako accepted her onto the team and the trio began practicing so that they could make it to the finals in the probending tournament. This path wasn't without its struggles as the trio had to deal with problems both within and outside of the team.

First, Bolin was kidnapped by Equalists and put before Amon as part of a demonstration of his power. He was rescued by his brother and Korra before anything bad happened and this act of bravery only furthered Bolin's feelings towards Korra. This relationship came to a head during one of the matches where Bolin discovered his brother making out with Korra and was subsequently heart broken. He eventually forgave his sibling and his friend, however, when he realized that Korra had never really felt that way for him and it was only a one-sided relationship. He moved on and the team performed better than ever.

However, it wasn't exactly smooth sailing from their. Amon and the Equalist were getting more bold with their plots and were threatening a move against benders by attacking the Probending arena. Korra and the boys convinced the council to let the games go on and to just increase security with the help of Chief Bei-Fong and the finals were secured. Little did they know this was all a part of Amon's plans as well.

Following that, their biggest match of all was fought against the Wolf Bats who played trick after dirty trick to guarentee their own victory. The Ferrets gave it their all but, in the end, they lost...only to have the match literally blow up in their face as Amon staged another raid and captured several benders...taking away their abilities and destroying the symbol of bending power: the pro-bending arena.

Now forced out of their homes and away from their beloved sport Bolin and Mako sought refuge at Mako's new girlfriend, Asami's, home. She was wealthy and more that capable of supporting the boys with whom she'd made fast friends with. Unfortunately, it wasn't to last. Asami's father, it turned out, was a supporter of Amon and was supplying the man with technology to combat the benders of Republic City with. The boys helped Asami and the others escape from Mr. Sato's clutches, but not before losing several of Bei-Fong's men to Amon's clutches.

Bolin, along with Mako and Asami, now moved over to Air Temple island with Korra. This new home was nice but even that wasn't going to last long as Amon's plans were put into motion. The quartet decided enough was enough and they needed to take matters into their own hands, going out and fighting Equalist as the new Team Avatar. However, not everyone approved of these activities and eventually Tarrlok had Bolin and the others arrested when they attempted to stop police brutality against a group of innocent non-benders. Not long after that, however, Korra confronted Tarrlok and discovered that he was, in fact, a blood bender and she was then captured herself by the man.

Knowing that they needed to find the avatar, Chief Bei-Fong busted the boys and Asami out of prison in the hopes that they could help her find Korra. At firs they assumed she had been taken by Amon (not knowing that Tarrlok was behind it) and went to his base of operations, a place only Bolin could lead them to since he had been taken there previously. They didn't find Korra, of course, but discovered that Tarrlok was lying because the Equalists had nothing to do with her disappearance. Tarrlok escaped the confrontation by bloodbending all of them into unconsciousness and later they happened upon Korra riding on Naga's back in the city.

Things only got worse from there was Amon launched an attack on the city itself, attempting to take out the remaining council members and taking over the city to rule on Equalist terms. Air Temple island was captured and Bolin and the others barely escaped on Naga's back to hide in safety in the city sewers (another place Bolin and Mako were all too familiar with). The group helped rescue General Iroh and, with his help, tried to figure out a strategy to reclaim the city without crippling more of the United Forces fleet. It was decided that Bolin, Asami, and Iroh would take out the air field that Sato was launching his newly invented airplanes from while Mako and Korra would go straight after Amon. The group parted ways and Bolin hugged both his brother and Korra...just in case.

The air field battle itself was pretty intense. The group first being captured by walking straight into an invisible, electrified barrier and then escaping with the help of Naga who had tagged along. Bolin fought several mechas and used his earth bending to destroy the field while Mako himself chased after the planes that had already launched. Bolin helped fend off the mechs and saved Asami as well, capturing the remaining Equalists and taking charge of the airfield.

It wasn't until later that Bolin learned what had occurred between Mako, Korra and Amon. He agreed to travel with Korra to the South pole in hopes that her master, Katara, would be able to undo whatever Amon had done to her to take away her bending. Unfortunately it was beyond Katara's ability to heal and Korra left Bolin and the others to be alone. She returned, later, having awakened in her Avatar state and Avatar Aang himself having reopened her ability to bend the four elements. Bolin was overjoyed and that night slept with the others in one of the huts in the village. It was then that he woke up in Traverse Town.

[Abilities]
Bolin is an earth bender which means he has control over rocks, dirt, sand, etc. He is not advanced enough to bend metal, but otherwise he's is fairly skilled.

[Other important stuff]
- Bolin speaks fire ferret, though this may have been a joke but Pabu did seem to understand his request so...go figure.
- Bolin will be bringing his pet fire-ferret, Pabu, with him to Somarium. I have included Pabu because he is a very close companion to Bolin having saved his life a number of times and helped him in other ways (ie to earn money). Bolin is very attached to the fire ferret and cares for him a lot (giving him baths, talking to him, stuffing him full of noodles). Bolin trusts his pet and relies on him to be there when Mako can't. In game, Pabu would do much the same: helping Bolin, getting him out of trouble, being adorable, etc.

[Sample post]
[First Person]
1. If you were to describe yourself in one sentence, what would that be?
Let's see, that's a good one. [Bolin looks very thoughtful, deeply considering this question] Hmmm. Yes, I've got it! [He sits up straighter, looking very happy] As I told Mako once: I'm fun-loving, strong, and gorgeous!

2. You're asked to take someone out for a date. Do you agree? If so, describe what you would do. If not, tell why.
[Bolin laughs] Sure! Dates are fun and I like to have fun. [He whispers, leaning forward as if to share a secret] I haven't been on that many dates, I mean, despite the rumors you know. [He sits up again] But I think if I were going to take a girl on a date, I'd try to take her to places that we both like. Definitely somewhere to eat for starters! I mean, I know a few good restaurants that are pretty cheap with excellent food and I would make sure I knew what my date liked to eat. After that we'd probably walk around and see the sites. You know, stuff that's fun to do but not necessarily expensive or anything.

3. Murder. What is your opinion?
[And now Bolin looks uncomfortable. He shifts uneasily and looks sad and serious.] Well it's not...good you know? I mean, you're killing someone who is important to somebody. Everyone has friends or family that would miss them, right? I don't think it's good and I don't think there's ever a good reason for it. Ever.

4. You have two options: either save your friend who is hanging from a cliff, or chase after the bad guy who put them in a position. If you choose the former, the bad guy will get away and it will be hard to catch him. If you choose the latter, the cliff will crumble and the friend will fall to the spiky rocks below. What do you do and why?
Definitely the save the friend! [He punches his fist into his open palm] We can always chase down the jerk who put them over the cliff later, together. What's important in that scenario is rescuing the person in danger.

5. There is a cake in the rain. What do you do?
[He sounds scandalized, like this is one of the worst possible crimes] Uh, duh, rescue the poor cake of course! I mean, honestly, who leaves good cake out in the middle of the rain? That's such a waste of delicious food! Besides, Mako and I don't get cake often. [He whispers, holding his hand up to cover his mouth] Mako says it's too sweet and a waste of money. We have to eat what's good for us and what we can afford. [Cough, speaking regularly now] I wouldn't eat it all myself though, I would at least offer some to my friends, like I said, we don't GET cake often.

6. Hey, did you hear about that giant sale going on? Interested? What would you want to get?
[Super excited now.] Oh oh oh! A sale? On what? Oh man I have to tell Mako about this! We can finally get some new clothes or maybe stock up on food! [Bolin pulls down his over shirt to show off his white tank top and puts a finger through one of the holes] See? I've had this undershirt for AGES now and it has all these holes in it. [Points a finger] And you do NOT want to see my underwear, trust me. And maybe we could finally get socks again! Oooh or we could go buy some new training gear if that's on sale. Never hurts to have extra face masks and pads around! [GLEEEEE] Oh, man, this is awesome! [Suddenly realizes that he is missing the sale, he jerks up in his seat] Does it end soon? We better go now! [Gets up and rushes off! He must go BUY THINGS!]

[Third Person]
"Come on, Pabu. It's just a field," Bolin complained, gesturing with both hands at the empty field. However, the fire ferret refused to go any further into the field filled with strange scarecrows. Pabu chattered and gave Bolin a pleading look as if to say 'No, Bolin, don't!' But, either Bolin didn't understand what his pet was trying to say or he chose to ignore it. "Suit yourself. I'm going to see what this field and these scarecrows are about and you can just sit there."

Bolin turned deliberately away from Pabu and strolled right into the field. "They're just scarecrows." He rubbed at his chin, "I mean, I guess we don't have them in the city...maybe that's why Pabu is so freaked out." As Bolin walked further into the field he started to feel a bit guilty about leaving Pabu behind. But, come on, it was HIS choice to be a stick in the mud and refuse to come along. At least he had come this far, which was more than he could say about Mako. Mako, who was out being responsible and finding a job or something, even in a dream world. "Who even works in a dream anyway? Oh, that's right, Mako. Being all responsible," Bolin pouted and then turned to one of the scarecrows, jabbing a finger in its face, "Well I can be responsible too you know!"

The scarecrow responded by lunging forward, straw-filled arms flailing about as it tried to get at Bolin. Bolin stumbled back, falling on his butt, "WOAH WHAT?! WHAT WAS THAT!" The scarecrow lunged at Bolin again and Bolin threw a fist up, driving a rock pillar into the scarecrow's solar plexus and causing it to fly back and knock a SECOND scarecrow over onto the field. "Hey! Time out!" he made a 't' with his hands, "You can't just go coming alive like that! Scarecrows DON'T move on their own. There's not even such a thing as a straw bender," he paused, staring as the scarecrows rose up. "Uh...at least I don't THINK there is."

The scarecrows advanced, Bolin scooted back on his butt since he hadn't thought to stand up yet. "Uh, that is, Mr. Scarecrows, I'm sure it's entirely reasonable for you to be coming after me with your wobbly straw arms and painted faces...but I really think there's been a misunderstanding here." The scarecrows continued to come forward, a third joining the first two. Bolin swallowed, "Oh, another friend? Really, three was a crowd. Four of us out here is just a bit much don't you think?" He paused, "Nothing? Right...uhm...GOTTA GO!" Bolin kicked up three decently sized boulders and launched them at the scarecrows' heads. They fell back and Bolin jumped to his feet, rushing back towards the edge of the field and Pabu.

"PABUYOUWERERIGHTLETSGO!" The fire ferret squeaked as Bolin snatched him up by his tail and booked it out of the field. That was the last time he would go ANYWHERE that Pabu told him not to. He really should listen to his Fire Ferret more often.

[Why do you want to play this character in Somarium?] The Avatar cast here is amazing and I would love to join them in some capacity. Also, Bolin is completely different from the characters I already play here and would just be a big ole ball of fun to have around, trust me.
[Which rule was your favorite and why?] "Be nice" because a game can only be this awesome if everyone treats each other right and don't act like jerks. Even if we do have problems, it's important that we still treat each other with compassion and caring.
[Where did you hear about Somarium?] You know.
[Any questions?] 8D
